The Department of Agriculture recently awarded P 12 million worth of agricultural interventions to the farmers of Marinduque, dubbed as the “Heart of the Philippines”, during the farmers’ forum and consultation held last February 1, 2016 at the Convention Center-Capitol Compound, Boac, Marinduque. Around 5,000 farmers and fisherfolks from the six municipalities attended the said activity.

12 draft animals with plow and harrow, 12 upgraded does, 20 marine engines, eight knapsack sprayers, 180 bags of registered palay seeds, 150 bags of certified palay seeds, 54 kilos of white corn seeds and 234 kilos of yellow corn seeds were raffled off for the individual farmers and fishermen while one cassava granulator, two hand tractors, two 18 footer motorized fiber glass boats and two power sprayers for associati ons.

The forum serves as a gateway for farmers and fishermen to directly talk and relay their problems, concerns and needs in agriculture to Sec. Alcala. “Huwag po kayong mag-alala dahil hindi po kami titigil upang maisaayos ang mga programa ng agrikultura pa ra sa lalawigan ng Marinduque” Alcala assured.

As per Sec. Alcala, the Department Agriculture will continually support the arrowroot cookies which is the Marinduque’s top ‘pasalubong’. He also said that he will order the Bureau of Animal Industry to prioritize their refrigerated van which they need in their newly established slaughter house. He also added that part of the agriculture’s program is to strengthen the production and marketing of native pig and chicken in the province.
Earlier that day, DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala along with BFAR Director Ruben Jardin, Governor Carmencita Reyes, DA Regional Director Atty. Cipriano G. Santiago, Mogpog Mayor Senen Livelo, Jr. and other DA and local government officials inaugurated the New Fish Landing Center in Balanacan, Mogpog, Marinduque.

The fish landing was the first center that was put up out of the five centers that are planned to be established for 2016. The project has a total cost of almost P 3million and located at Port of Balanacan. This will serve as post where the fisherfolks can market their products and a doorway for them to import and export their goods. “It will serve the purpose para mas lalong maging abot-kaya ng mga taga-Marinduque ang pangunahing pangangailangan sa isda” Alcala said. Aside from the center, Alcala also turned over two chest freezer and stainless fish cabinets.
