The Local Farmer Technicians (LFTs) of Palawan Province had a five-day educational tour in the provinces of Nueva Ecija and Laguna on April 6 – 10, 2015. There were 49 LFTs who had participated in the said activity. The activity aimed to expose the Local Farmer Technician from modern farming and new technology to different mechanisms.
On the first day, the group visited the Central Luzon State University (CLSU), where they had a briefing and video presentation before the campus tour. They had attended lectures given by Dr. Sofronio P. Kalaw on the rice-based mushroom production. The participants were taught on the step-by-step process of producing oyster mushroom. They had also visited different facilities including the laboratory.
The participants had proceeded to PhilRiceCES for the briefing and video presentation facilitated by PhilRice staff. Afterwhich, the LFTs were invited by Dr. Frisco Malabanan to witness the Harvest Festival at the town of Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija regarding SL varieties of hybrid rice. They were also given the chance to visit demo areas, research areas, breeder areas and newly-opened rice museum.
They had proceeded to PhilMech where they were welcomed by Engr. Aldrin Hipolito and had a video presentation and tour to the different machineries in the area, like transplanter, combine harvester, flatbed dryer and others.
On the following day, the participants took a visit to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Banos, Laguna. The first area they visited was the Rice World Museum where they were welcomed by Dr. Jean Du. Some raised questions on the different varieties of Hybrid Rice during a brief forum. Afterwhich they had been given 1kg of new rice varieties like NSIC Rc238, Rc222 and Rc344 SR by IRRI.
MAO Antonio Gammad of Narra led the group of Local Farmer Technicians (LFTs) from the different municipalities of Palawan. Maria Teresa B. Cabrido, Marilou P. Layug and Pacita Ragma had represented the DA –RFO MIM A R O PA Rice Program.
