PUERTO PRINCESA CITY – Key government officials from the Department of Education (DepEd) -Palawan and the Department of Agriculture (DA) MIMAROPA region led the awarding of winners during the Awarding Ceremony of the Regional Search for Best School Garden under the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program. The search for Best School Garden in Elementary and Secondary School levels in MIMAROPA is an annual activity and a joint venture of the Department of Agriculture through its focal person Dr. Celso Olido, and the Department of Education Region 4-B.

The program aims to boost the awareness of the young children on the significance of growing vegetables through the Gulayan sa Paaralan program. Under the said project, the vege-tables should be organically-grown in plots and in empty containers to mini-mize expenses. Furthermore, it would help and train the students to refrain from consuming foods with chemicals derive from Pesticide/Insecticide which is considered health hazards. And since the vegetables are chemical-free, those are safe to use in the school feeding program. Schools from all over the region joined the search but schools in Marinduque, Palawan and Puerto Princesa City had emerged winners in both categories - the plot gardening and container gardening for elementary and secondary levels. School officials from Marinduque were not able to attend the ceremony but their awards were received by the faculty members assigned by the organizers. Winning schools received a certificate, assorted vegetable seeds and sets of garden tools from the Department of Agriculture – MIMAROPA.
