Narra, Palawan – Mr. Antonio R. Gonzales (inset), DA-MIMAROPA Operations Division Chief, and Regional Corn and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) coordinator congratulates the combined graduates of a season-long Farmers Field School (FFS) for rice and corn held at Narra, Palawan on October 23, 2014 during the 13th Annual Palay Festival celebration. Farmers from five barangays of Narra have completed the six-month course on Rice and Corn production conducted by the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office (DA-RFO) 4-B in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) through the initiative of the Regional Corn and Cassava Report Officer Engr. Christine Inting.
Each graduate has received a certificate of completion signed by Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, and a medal courtesy of Mayor Lucena D. Demaala and the Sangguniang Bayan of Narra. Top five performers in each barangay were also recognized and awarded with medals handed to them by their loved ones.
Same activity was also conducted in barangay Luzviminda, Puerto Princesa City where 25 farmers were have been conferred with graduate certificates for a season-long FFS exclusively on corn.
The organizers have also invited experts from UP Los Baños for a cooking demonstration to encourage people to use corn products in cooking corn grits and corn flour as alternatives for rice and wheat flour in food preparation. To prove that corn dishes are easy to prepare, palatable and nutritious, participants were encouraged to take part in cooking and in food tasting of different corn-inspired dishes like corngee, steamed rice-corn mixed, fried rice-corn mixed, champorado rice-corn mixed, cornballs and pulvoron.
