The city of Calapan in Oriental Mindoro and the municipalities of Rizal and Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro are among the top 50 municipalities and cities that were awarded each with 500,000 worth of agricultural project grants by the Department of Agriculture during the 2012 Rice Achievers' Awarding ceremonies held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on March 15, 2013. In MIMAROPA region, twenty-eight (28) Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) from the municipalities of Rizal, Sablayan, San Jose and Calapan City are among the top 500 awardees who received a trophy and P20,000 cash incentive each.
The contest is being conducted, in recognition to the hard work done by the farmers, farm technicians and to the support of local government leaders in increasing rice production to attain food sufficiency in the country.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala handed over the awards assisted by Undersecretary for Operations Joel S. Rudinas and Asst. Secretary Dante S. Delima.
This year's top 10 provinces include Nueva Ecija, Isabela, Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Bulacan, Kalinga, La Union, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Sur. The province of Occidental Mindoro ranked 11th placer so the provincial government will receive P200,000- worth of projects as incentive.
Other winners included 10 irrigators' associations (IAs), with P1-million worth of project grant each; three small water impounding system farmers' associations (SWISAs), with P500,000 each of project grant and 500 agricultural extension workers (AEWs). All of the awardees also got an Agri-Pinoy trophy.
